Assessment Task

You will use technology effectively and appropriately to communicate information in a selected format. The ultimate goal is to create and publish an online product that integrates multiple digital sources and that facilitates communication, promotes interactivity and/or collaboration and requires higher-order thinking skills. Follow the steps outlined below to complete this assessment task.

1)      Familiarize yourself with the Scoring Tool for Evaluating Technology

Standard II: Communication, Outcome B that accompanies this assessment task. Use this tool to guide you when completing this assessment task.

2)      Identify an appropriate topic for which you can use technology to

communicate information. Specify the intended audience and purpose. You will need to state your topic, intended audience and the purpose as part of your product that integrates multiple digital sources (e.g., in an introductory section). You must also provide to your instructor a brief narrative that describes your rationale for selecting your topic, intended audience and the purpose. Example topics might include presenting budget information to a School-Based Management Team or curriculum information to parents and students.

3)      Based on the elements of effective instructional design for media (see

Scoring Tool for Evaluating Technology Standard II: Communication, Outcome B) select and justify appropriate formats (e.g., table, chart, text, diagram, outline) to present your communication topic. You must provide this justification to your instructor for review and feedback. Design a product to communicate information to your intended audience that integrates multiple digital sources (e.g., text, graphics, sound). The formats you select may include, but may not be limited to, links to relevant information. However, you must demonstrate an understanding of the information contained in any links you include and show the relevance for including them in your product (e.g., summary of information contained in the link, explanation of how information contained in the link can be used).

4)      Based on the elements of effective instructional design for media (see

Scoring Tool for Evaluating Technology Standard II: Communication, Outcome B), create a product that integrates multiple digital sources to communicate your topic to your intended audience.

5)      Identify the required set of web-publishing guidelines for the site of your online product (see Sample School District Acceptable Guidelines for Online Publishing). Your institution may have such guidelines, which typically include considerations such as privacy, storage capacity, illegal copying and inappropriate materials or language. If your school does not have such guidelines, select a set from another school or an internet provider such as AOL or Mindspring. Publish your product online in accordance with the selected guidelines. You must provide to your instructor both the guidelines and an explanation of your use of them within your product.

6)      Following the guidelines identified above, publish your product online.

You will need to familiarize yourself with the Scoring Tool for Evaluating Technology Standard II: Communication, Outcome B. Use this scoring guide to evaluate and rate the teacher candidates’ electronic interactions associated with this assessment task.

A Sample School District Acceptable Guidelines for Online Publishing (http://www.rice.edu/armadillo/auppolicy.html) is provided. Students should follow guidelines for the school, business, or organization that will host their product.

You will need to provide feedback to the teacher candidate upon review of his/her narrative (required in Step 2) regarding the topic, audience and purpose. This may be accomplished via a meeting/conference or a written document.

You will need to provide feedback to the teacher candidate upon review of his/her justification (required in Step 3) regarding appropriate techniques to present his/her communication topic. This feedback may be combined with the feedback you provide about the narrative (Step 2) and be accomplished via a meeting/conference or a written document.

You will need to collect the web-publishing guidelines used by the teacher candidate to publish his/her product online and an explanation of how s/he used them, as appropriate/applicable (required in Step 5).
