Technology Standard

In Integrating Technology into the Curriculum and Instruction, each teacher candidate will design, implement and assess learning experiences that incorporate use of technology in a curriculum-related instructional activity to support understanding, inquiry, problem solving, communication and/or collaboration.

 

Technology Indicators

The assessment task product will be examined in terms of seven proficiency indicators. The teacher candidate will:

1.      Assess students’ learning/instructional needs to identify the appropriate technology for instruction.

2.      Evaluate technology materials and media to determine their most appropriate instructional use.

3.      Select and apply research-based practices for integrating technology into instruction.

4.      Use appropriate instructional strategies for integrating technology into instruction.

5.      Select and use appropriate technology to support content-specific student learning outcomes.

6.      Develop an appropriate assessment for measuring student outcomes through the use of technology.

7.      Manage a technology-enhanced environment to maximize student learning.

Assessment Task

 

The Maryland Plan for Technology in Education (2002-2005) mission statement supports Maryland Teacher Technology Standard V: Integrating Technology into the Curriculum and Instruction:

“Improved student learning will be achieved through the seamless integration of technology into Maryland schools. The use of technology, and the digital content that it brings, will create dynamic and challenging learning environments that engage and motivate our students, enabling all to be independent, competent and creative thinkers, and effective communicators and problem solvers. In addition, improved planning, monitoring and productivity will result from use of information systems by teachers and those who administer and manage classroom, school and school programs.”

The Maryland Plan for Technology in Education (2002-2005) introduction describes a transformed learning environment that exhibits the following:

In this assessment task you will plan, teach, videotape, and reflect on your own lesson integrating technology into instruction. To demonstrate your competency you will submit and be assessed on the following products:

  • Lesson plan
  • Lesson Overview Summary Sheet
  • Videotape
  • Two electronic (word-processed) reflective journals

Your technology integrated lesson should:

 

  • engage learners in constructing their own knowledge through the use of technology;
  • be based on content standards (Voluntary State Curriculum), Maryland Teacher Technology Standards (MTTS), and National Educational Technology Standards for Students (NETS – for students);
  • be supported with research-based promising practices;
  • support differentiated instruction; and
  • apply instructional strategies such as inquiry, collaboration and/or problem solving appropriate for diverse learners.

Process for developing and implementing your technology-integrated lesson

 

Complete the five sections of the process. For this process, you will need the Lesson Overview Summary Sheet, the Hardware/Software Checklist, and the Lesson Plan format from your Institution of Higher Education (IHE) or local school system.

 

1. Gathering initial information

 

 

o 

Meet with your mentor teacher to determine the subject area and topic in which you will be teaching the technology-enhanced lesson. If possible indicate the specific curricular outcome(s) and indicator(s) your lesson will address. Your decision about subject area/topic should be based on your analysis of student achievement in the school and classroom to which you are assigned.

 

 

o   

 

Explore the content standards and technology standards that are relevant to the subject area/topic for which you will be developing the lesson.

 

 

o   

 

Secure approval from your mentor teacher for the date when you will teach your technology-integrated lesson.

 

 

o   

 

Obtain and sign all forms for appropriate use of technology [e.g. Acceptable Use Policy (AUP), video taping release, consent forms] and submit these to your program coordinator.

2. Accessing appropriate resources

 

 

o 

To determine the technology resources available to teach the lesson, review the Hardware/Software Check List that is to be completed with the school technology coordinator or library media specialist and consult with your mentor teacher. If necessary, meet with the school technology coordinator or library media specialist to obtain more information about hardware/software and how to learn to use these resources.

 

 

o

3. Completing the Lesson Overview Summary Sheet

 

 

o   

Before creating the Lesson Plan, review the ‘Look fors’ in the Lesson Overview Summary Sheet Lesson Plan section of the Scoring Tool for Technology Standard V: Integrating Technology into the Curriculum and Instruction with your mentor teacher.

 

 

o   

Complete the Lesson Overview Summary Sheet to focus the development of the lesson.

Review the Scoring Tool for Technology Standard V: Integrating Technology into the Curriculum and Instruction and consult with your mentor teacher in completing the Lesson Overview Summary Sheet.

 

  

o   

 

Send a draft of the Lesson Overview Summary Sheet to your mentor teacher and supervisor/instructor. Revise and resubmit the Lesson Overview Summary Sheet until it is approved by both the mentor teacher and IHE supervisor/instructor.

 

 

 

 

 

4. Developing the Lesson Plan

 

 

o   

Use the Lesson Overview Summary Sheet to guide you in creating a Lesson Plan for the topic you will teach. This Lesson Plan:

     •  should follow the approved lesson format for your school or IHE;

     •  could be part of an existing lesson plan adapted to fit the current situation and audience;

     •  may be a portion of a lesson spanning one or more days;

     •  should include scoring tool(s) for measuring student attainment of outcomes and student technology products.

 

 

o   

Send a draft of the Lesson Plan to your mentor teacher and supervisor/instructor. Revise and resubmit the Lesson Plan until it is approved by both the mentor teacher and IHE supervisor/instructor.

 

5. Implementing and Reflecting on the Technology Integrated Lesson

 

 

o   

Implement and videotape your technology integrated lesson. The school’s policies regarding videotaping in a classroom must be followed. Prior to the day of the videotaping, make the arrangements for videotaping with the person who will be videotaping your presentation. Work with this person to ensure that key aspects of the lesson are captured. The following are suggestions for managing the videotaping of your lesson:

·        Check out the equipment before the day of the videotaping to make certain that it is available and is working.

·        Ask your mentor teacher or your institution of higher education supervisor to videotape your presentation.

·        Collaborate with a fellow teacher candidate to videotape each other’s presentation.

 

 

o   

 

Immediately after implementing the lesson but before viewing the videotape, complete the Activity A: Electronic Journal Reflection addressing the prompts listed in the Scoring Tool for Technology Standard V: Integrating Technology into the Curriculum and Instruction

 

 

o   

o      

After watching the videotape of the lesson, complete the Activity B:  Electronic Journal Reflection addressing the prompts listed in the Scoring Tool for Technology Standard V: Integrating Technology into the Curriculum and Instruction.

 

 

o 

Select a 5-minute video section or edited segment (for example, introduction, lesson, and closure) from your videotaped lesson that illustrates your implementation of technology using key instructional strategies. Cue the videotape to that section/segment. Before selecting the video section/segment, review the ‘Look fors’ in the Lesson Implementation and Videotape section of the Scoring Tool for Technology Standard V: Integrating Technology into the Curriculum and Instruction.

 

NOTE: The quality of the videotape is not evaluated (i.e., not an element in the scoring tool) but there must be a viewable videotape; its purpose is to help the teacher candidate and the supervisor recall events when assessing implementation of the learning activity.

 

 

Evaluation

The Scoring Tool for Technology Standard V: Integrating Technology into the Curriculum and Instruction will be used to assess Lesson Overview Summary Sheet (Lesson Plan), selected Videotape segment, and the two electronic (word processed) journal reflections.

Instructor Notes

§         Provide teacher candidates a copy of the scoring tool associated with this task to facilitate their understanding and assist in the development of a quality product(s).

o       Review and explain the scoring scale, target performance, products, and scoring criteria.

o       Emphasize that the scoring tool will evaluate their performance and includes key elements to be assessed.

§         Model a full range of examples of ways to design, deliver and assess learning experiences that integrate student use of technology to support inquiry, problem solving, communication and/or collaboration.

§         Provide practice integrating technology and having students use technology in the classroom before completing this assessment task.

§         Instruct teacher candidates to follow the school or school district requirements for videotaping in a classroom. To facilitate this videotaping, the teacher candidate might ask his/her mentor teacher, his/her IHE supervisor, or a fellow teacher candidate to videotape the lesson associated with this assessment task.

§         Remind the intern or teacher candidate to complete the initial planning with his/her mentor teacher for the technology-integrated lesson during the orientation time at the Professional Development School.

§         Remind teacher candidates that the videotape must be cued to show just the key aspects of the lesson and that only 5 minutes of the video tape will be reviewed. Encourage teacher candidates with videotape editing skills to prepare a videotape for submission that contains just the key aspects of the lesson.

§         Remind the teacher candidates that the quality of the videotape will not be evaluated but it must be viewable. The purpose of the videotape is to help the teacher candidate and the supervisor recall events when assessing implementation of the integrated lesson.

§         Direct teacher candidates to use the questions provided for the brief reflection and the scoring tool elements for the thorough reflection. The questions should not be considered an exhaustive set, but are provided to help structure the many factors that must be considered when incorporating student use of technology into instruction.

§         Remind teacher candidates that the lesson plan format used for this task must be approved by the mentor teacher or the school system.

§         Remind teacher candidates to appropriately reference resources to support research-based strategies used in the lesson.

 

 

 

Recommended Placement in Teacher Education Program

Because of the knowledge and skills needed for successful performance, it is recommended that teacher candidates complete this assessment task late in his/her internship/clinical experience (e.g., second semester of student teaching).
